Mind Kettering

Mind Kettering are affiliated with the national mental health charity, Mind, and takes part in many of their fundraising campaigns. There is a community resource called the Mixing Bowl which is in Russell Street, Kettering, and is open on Mondays and from Wednesdays to Fridays from 11am-1.30pm. People are welcome to pop in for a cup of tea and some food, and also read receive support and information on mental health and wellbeing.

Home-Start

Home-Start is a local charity which is aimed at giving support to families, usually with young children, who might be finding it difficult to cope. Home-Start is based in the William Knibb Centre in Montagu Street. Volunteers from this charity visit families for a couple of hours a week to make sure they have the support they need. Home-Start also run a weekly lottery for people to support their work.

British Heart Foundation

This well-known charity was founded in 1961 and is the single biggest funder of cardiovascular research with the aim of cutting heart disease in the UK. The British Heart Foundation has a shop on the High Street which, public holidays apart, is open seven days a week. They accept good-quality shoes, clothes, books, CDs, DVDs, toys and more. The charity also welcomes volunteers for sorting and pricing, as well as selling in their shops.

Cancer Research UK

Another well-known medical charity, Cancer Research UK, also has a shop on Kettering High Street. They accept shoes and clothing, plus various electrical items, including mobile phones and used printer cartridges. However, it is recommended to check with the specific store before donating electrical items; this is because most of these need to be tested by a registered electrician before they can be resold.

Cancer Research UK raises money to fund research at hospitals and universities across the UK, and have shops in both Kettering and nearby Corby.

Kettering and District Foodbank

The main location for this local charity is in Gold Street, Kettering. They distribute food parcels to the needy and work with referral agencies to ensure the donated food goes to those who need it in times of crisis.

Kettering and District’s Foodbank is run by the Trussell Trust in partnership with the KCU (Kettering Community Unit), the county and borough councils, local churches and supermarkets and other commercial organisations.

Age UK Northamptonshire

The charity has a shop in Stamford Road, Kettering, which is open from Mondays to Saturdays, although the hours may vary. It provides a range of services in the town and the surrounding county to improve the life of elderly people.

Age UK don’t just need volunteers to help out in their shops; subject to safety checks, you can also join the befriending scheme to ensure the elderly people receive some sort of human contact during the week. This means the charity provides regular home visits or phone calls to vulnerable or infirm people.
