With the festive season now over, many people may have made a New Year Resolution to shed the pounds. So what are your options in the local area? As letting agents offering houses and rooms to rent in Kettering, at Ashan Property we know the area well. Here we look at ways of getting fit in and around Kettering.
Join the Kettering Parkrun
Joining in with the Kettering Parkrun is a fun way to get fit with other people. Simply turn up at Wicksteed Park on Saturday morning ready for a 9am start and from then on it’s you against the clock on a 5km course.
The beauty of parkruns is that they cater for all ages and abilities and you can be as fast or as slow as you like. It is also an excellent way of making new friends; after every event participants meet up for a post-run coffee in a nearby café. Parkruns also operate in the nearby towns of Market Harborough and Corby.
Losing the Pounds
Slimming World offers regular classes for those who want to lose weight, with a Wednesday afternoon session in the Royal Hotel in the Market Place, plus at other locations around the town. Classes also operate in the nearby villages of Barton Seagrave and Thrapston. Weight Watchers also operate in several venues in the town, including the Cornmarket Hall in London Road and the London Road United Reformed Church Hall in St Peter’s Avenue.
Going to the Gym?
The town has a number of fitness studios where you can work out. These include the gym at Kettering Swimming Pool in London Road, which can accommodate up to 25 people at any one time. The town’s Balance Health Club on Thurston has a pool and spa as well as a gym, while Simply Gym is based on the Telford Way Industrial Estate close to the hospital. The Ladies First Fitness Club in Montagu Street is for women of all ages and fitness levels.
Walking and Rambling
Kettering Borough Council also organises regular Health Walks, on Wednesday mornings, with a special winter programme on Thursdays. The shorter walks last up to an hour, and the longer ones up to 90 minutes.
Kettering also has a dedicated group of ramblers who are affiliated to the Northamptonshire county organisation. They welcome new members on their excursions, which are often held at weekends. Like the Health Walks, the routes cover both the town and the surrounding villages.
Kicking the Habit
The NHS’s Stop Smoking Service operates every Wednesday at Kettering Borough Council’s offices in Bowling Green Road. You can either make an appointment or just drop in on the day and you will receive helpful advice and information if you want to kick the habit. You will get free one-to-one support and recommendations about any medicines you should purchase. The Parklands Hypnotherapy Clinic in Bluebell Close also has sessions devoted to giving up smoking.
